First Dance Class

Guest Post: Daddy

Anna had her first dance class that included tap and ballet.  Daddy took her to class while on paternity leave.  She was excited in the days and hours leading up to the class including getting dressed with her sister (thanks for the dance shoes Kate!).

A worker let a couple of the girls peak into the room while the teacher, Ms. Marilyn, got ready and Anna jumped at the chance.  Ms.Marilyn came out to greet the 10 students and their parents and laid out some ground rules including no parents in the dance room, but we could watch through the window.  Ms. Marilyn led the girls into the classroom wearing tap shoes and carrying ballet shoes.  She sat them down and gave them a sticker to put on their shoes to correspond with the color of the "X" they should stand upon.  Ms. Marilyn has supposedly been doing this for years and had the classroom presence to back it up.  The girls were good, but when one wouldn't listen Ms. Marilyn would stop the class and call out the offender.

Anna smiled the whole time and had a blast.  Daddy's scouting reporting includes some of the best balance when tapping and during whatever dancers call the female version of bowing.  Anna reported that they played Sleeping Beauty music (with no words) for them.  They were then expected to change into their ballet shoes on their own.  Anna changed hers quickly and then got impatient waiting for the other girls so got up and started dancing on her own; Ms. Marilyn stopped the class to stop Anna and bring her back to the group (she told mommy about this several times).  Otherwise Anna was wonderful at staying on her "X" and following directions.  During ballet they held two scarves (Anna was quick to grab purple) and pranced around the room to directions from the teacher. She did tip toes and did run dancing with her ballet shoes and point front/back with her tap shoes.

At the end Anna was quick to line up at the door upon request and came out with a big smile.  She is looking forward to going back! She told mommy that she likes dance so much more then gymnastics.

Three of the 10 girls were named Anna, including the daughter of a friend of Jenny's. Anna thought this was quite hilarious and was the first thing she reported back home to mommy.

PS You'll notice  Ashley is also dressed up for dance, tutu and all. She had her first lesson with mommy when Anna and Daddy left. She can't wait to dance too!

PSS According to Daddy, Anna's outfit really stood out (duh, she chose it!). Apparently everyone else was wearing light pink tights, light pink tutu and a black or light pink leotard. Not my Anna, she was born to shine :)
