Ashley and the Cavity

This past Tuesday we went to get Ashley's cavity filled. And she did AWESOME!!!!!! I mean so blow your socks off awesome that halfway though it I wondered if I had brought the wrong child with me.....

So...... before we get to the dentist she is skipping around the house with a huge excited smile, telling Grammy, "Bye. Going to get my cavity scratched out!" She literally thought they were just going to scratch it out. And she was okay with that. It was my saving grace.

Back up 2 weeks ago at the dentist when she is balling on my lap after finding out that she has a cavity. She is crying so hard and so upset that the dentist tells her, it's not a bad one, he can just scratch it out. Then she stops crying. I pray nightly that he was right because the last time a dentist said a procedure was going to be "easy" it became the most difficult nightmare of my life....

But luckily this dentist was right on.

So back to Tuesday. As we walk into the dentist she is all smiles and spends sometime cuddling on my lap while watching Mickey Mouse. I tell her I will be right by her side the entire time and there's nothing to worry about. The nurse comes out and she excitedly walks back to her room, climbs up on the dentist chair,  looks at us an smiles. Then she lays down, ready to go!!! The nurse asks her if she want to breathe "candy air" and she immediately responds yes! So getting the nitrous oxide on her and keeping it on her was no problem. These child health care doctors do amaze me. Then after some time the dentist comes in and tells her he is going to use his electric toothbrush (small drill) to clean her tooth. He says it might tickle. As soon as she feels it she lets out the loudest laugh I have ever heard come out her mouth (a laugh filled with nerves, anticipation and laughing gas). Then he tells her she has to be really careful not to laugh so he can make sure and get the spot clean, And she listens.

Literally 5 minutes later the spot is cleaned, brushed off and a filling is applied. Luckily they didn't need to numb the area since it was a surface cavity with not much depth to it (so thankful I didn't have to deal with another shot!). The dentist then leaves after reminding her to take good care of her teeth and she has to sit and wait until the nitrous oxide has run its course. After the nurse takes off the breathing mask she sits up and is all wobbly. Not saying much except that she feels weird. T

he nurse goes on to tell her that she is completely amazed at how wonderful Ashley did and told her she is so proud of how brave she was. Ashley gives a huge smile. And then she closes her mouth and says he tooth feels funny. After explaining to her that the first day or so after getting a cavity the tooth will feel weird as it molds to her other teeth, she finally buys into us that it's going to be ok. But she tells us she doesn't like it. Then the nurse goes and gets her a balloon and ice cream. One bite of ice cream and Ashley is near tears spitting the ice cream out.

As she is drooling and spitting the ice cream out she finally says the taste in her mouth is awful (from the filling) and the only thing that would make it better is shaved ice. So with a drooling 5 year old we make it home FAST to get her shaved ice. And miraculously the taste is gone.

So proud of you Ash Ash! Hopefully this is the first and last cavity :)

 "Candy Air"

"Candy Air" was getting into her eyes so they gave her sunglasses :)

"Yucky. Yucky. Taste."

Brand new clean tooth! no cavity!!!
