Bye Bye Ashley's Tooth
Last Friday morning we went to the dentist to get Ashley's tooth fixed. We went in planning to get a root canal and then have a cap put on over her front baby tooth. She was not allowed to eat or drink after midnight the prior night due to the fact that she was going under anesthesia so luckily she slept in until 7:15. So we did not need to sidetrack her from wanting her milk baba. And when she got up she was super excited to go get rid of her hurt tooth and kept telling us she was excited to get a new blue tooth (for some reason she really wants a blue tooth!). And what did she choose to wear to her appointment? None other then her "most beautiful dress." I wasn't going to fight her, she dressed and we were off!
Here we are waiting in the waiting room to get her "blue tooth." She was all excited and couldn't wait!
The dentist called us back and they got her all prepped for the surgery. I had to give her a huge bear hug to hold her arms down while they gave her a shot of sedative in her arm. She cried for about 30 seconds, looked at my with heavy, zombie, rolling eyes and then conked out on my chest. They then took her away and asked us to leave while they administered her anesthesia and the doctor did the surgery.
We got to the waiting room at 8:02 (2 nervous wrecks we were) and were called back to get her at 8:42 (while I was feeding Abby of course). When we looked down at her mouth, she looked pretty beat up. Chapped lips, bloody residue, weird foam stuff in her mouth and swollen lips. And we saw a huge gap where her tooth used to be. We had planned on capping on the tooth but that didn't happen. The baby tooth wasn't intact; it was wiggly so they had to pull the whole tooth and will later put in a fake tooth to maintain the space. And since they couldn't stop the gums from bleeding from the pulled tooth like they do for adults with gauze, they had to spray it with some foam to clot the blood. Then they took a mold of her tooth and in 2 weeks we will go back to get the tooth put in.
Daddy held onto Ashley as she slowly came out of anesthesia. At this time the dentist told us the thing we feared most with the pulled tooth; no pacifier for 24 hours. It mean cold turkey, no paci at all, or the foam may come out of where the tooth was pulled from and blood would go everywhere. Rob and I were in pure panic mode. No paci???? Uh oh.....
When coming out of anesthesia she was incoherent. Rob was holding her and she was groaning and looked like a drunk, drunk old man. She was a 28 pound newborn that couldn't hold up her head, couldn't stand, couldn't talk. As time passed she could communicate more and more. The first thing we understood was her asking something like "Am I awake?" Then she talked in gibberish about some other things for a while and kept asking if she was awake. Then she noticed me standing in front of her and asked for mommy to hold her. Then she asked where Abby was and she wanted to kiss her "toesies."
Slowly she recognized us and could answer some questions and we were discharged pretty quickly. Luckily I had brought a present to give her on the car ride home, Jetsam the eel from the little mermaid. Good thing I did because he talked about him and Ursula pretty much the entire way home. (Which kept her from asking for paci).
When we got home she still couldn't fully walk on her own or communicate clearly and she wanted SO badly to play with her Anna. She kept asking where Anna was if she wasn't right by her side. Anna was quite concerned with why we were carrying Ashley the way we were and why she couldn't get up. So to make both girls happy, we retired to the couch to watch some movies.
She was pretty proud of her tooth and was in no pain at all. She kept saying, "My tooth feels so much better mommy," and "It doesn't hurt anymore mommy." Poor baby girl. She must have been in some major pain!
