RMNP- Discovery Hike at Moraine Park
Yesterday morning we headed to the Moraine Visitor center for a Discovery hike.
The girls got to meet their first ranger, Ranger Steve. He took us on a 1 1/2 hour discover hike where we also participated in 3 activities.
In the first activity the girls received a picture of a rock and was told to find it in our surroundings. We found the wrong rock (geology was always hard for mommy too!) but had fun. We did find our rock later on that day thought :)
The second activity was, after listening to the ranger speak about the history of the area, to draw a picture of what the area looks like today and what they think it looked like 20,000 years ago. The girls were then asked to share their drawings and despite being soft spoken and timid, did well. Masterpieces!!!!!!!
The third activity was a 100 inch hike. We took a string that was 100 inches and plced it upon stuff on the ground that we wanted to discover about the area. This was pretty neat. In the 100 inch hike the ranger wanted us to use our senses to explore what we found. We smelled sage, learned that pinecones contain seeds that squirrels eat, learned what berries squirrels eat and smelled a ponderosa tree that smelled so good; like toffee!
All in all the girls enjoyed it. It was a little too long and slow for my taste but no one else seemed to mind. I think they learned a lot too. We did have a couple mishaps.... Abby refused to walk the trail, she refused to be carried on the trail and Abby was making our hike go very slow...... Ashley cried- the ranger told her no picking flowers or taking rocks but he didn't understand that she had brought the rock from home and that she picked the flowers off the floor after they had been broken by something/one else. She hid behind a tree for the last 10 minutes of the last activity and then fell and scraped her knee.... Poor thing.
