Drive there was crazy but beautiful. Roads were poorly marked, potholes and big rocks on the dirt road; we even drove through a knee deep river to get there. But the scenery was beautiful.
In this region, there exists a large Mennonite community. We were lucky enough to pass a mennonite family in a old fashion horse drawn wagon. It was pretty cool! They stared at us in our huge Ford Expedition and we stared right back :)
Once we got to Barton Creek Cave at Mike's Place, we drove up to a beautiful setting...
It was gorgeous. I was honestly expecting a shack of a canoe rental and was shocked to come across this little paradise. We signed up for the canoe tour, got in our hard hats and life jackets and boarded the canoes. Daddy, Mary and Abby in one canoe; Poppy and Anna in another; Ashley, mommy and the guide completed the 3rd canoe. The girls were in charge of the lights for the cave and they were so excited.
Canoe by canoe, we entered the cave. And slowly it got pitch dark. With the lights lighting our way we were able to explore the "Mayan path to the Underworld." Accidentally spotting bat colonies on the walls, having bats fly by our faces, having to duck under cave formations and trying not to tip over, it was an adventure. The girls did awesome. Abby did some canoe jumping from one to another but luckily we all stayed dry :)
BATS!!!!!!
We spent close to 1 1/2 hours (maybe 2) in the cave hearing the guided talk about the cave itself and the Mayan beliefs behind the cave. He pointed out artifacts, told stories and was great with us and the kids.
The canoe trip out of the cave went much faster and I was pretty relieved to see light again :)
Such a cool experience!!!
On the way out of Mikes we drove through the village that lay atop the cave.... the cave is below this soccer field :)
